UBC Student Learning

The Learning Exchange is a connection point in the Downtown Eastside (DTES) for both UBC students and faculty. Here are some of the ways we work with the university community:

Students

Students get involved alongside local residents to learn, support and lead. Powerful real-life learning experiences – through volunteering or customized coursework – extend and enrich classroom instruction. Students gain new perspectives about the DTES through their connection with the Learning Exchange and our community partners.

Faculty

We collaborate with UBC faculty to create hands-on learning experiences that complement coursework. Our supports can range from embedding experiential learning into existing classes to running entire courses at the Learning Exchange for an immersive, place-based approach. We also introduce faculty to our partner community organizations interested in student placements.

Student Orientation Materials

The UBC Learning Exchange has developed orientation materials to help students learn about Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES). A resource for community organizations and UBC faculty, staff and students, the information – which ranges from self-guided neighbourhood walks to videos where community members talk about the DTES – can be customized for individual student experiences.
