Wikipedia is the world’s most popular online encyclopedia. It’s free, not-for-profit, and anyone can edit it. But can you always trust what it says?
By learning to critically read Wikipedia, you can spot gaps, mistakes, and inconsistencies. Best of all, you can contribute to making it better. Each small change can have a big impact on what people are learning about your community and the things you care about. And it’s easy to get started!
Join University of Alberta librarian Sarah Severson for a conversation about the history of Wikipedia, how Wikipedia is made, and how you can engage in editing as information activism.
This is the first of a two-part series. Part two, on Nov. 16, is a hands-on workshop where we’ll practice editing Wikipedia articles related to the DTES together.
The event is a collaboration between the UBC Learning Exchange and UBC’s X̱wi7x̱wa Library. X̱wi7x̱wa Library is a centre for academic and community Indigenous scholarship. Its collections and services reflect Aboriginal approaches to teaching, learning, and research. Everyone is welcome to visit X̱wi7x̱wa Library.
