    UBC Reading Week 2009 community service projects in schools

    July 28, 2009 - “This experience allowed me to increase my awareness of the diverse communities that are present in Vancouver. By engaging in this activity, I became much more knowledgeable about the world at large.” This from a UBC student participating in the “Race to the Finish” Community Service Learning (CSL) project at Britannia Elementary School in Vancouver’s Eastside.

    Globe and Mail - June 4, 2009 - Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside is often referred to as Canada’s poorest six blocks, and the challenges faced by its residents are legion. But thanks to a University of British Columbia initiative,the Learning Exchange,many residents are facing those challenges with the support ofcommitted volunteers. In the process, UBC students are developing community awareness and leadership skills that can’t be taught on campus.

    Celebrating nine years of learning exchanges

    On November 26th, 2008 the UBC Learning Exchange celebrated its ninth birthday and welcomed the community to its new location at 612 Main Street. The afternoon open house packed the Chinatown building with over 300 guests who reflected on almost a decade of creative and homegrown approaches to learning.

  • Learning Exchange Director receives prestigious Margaret Fulton Award

    March 22, 2009 - UBC Learning Exchange Director Dr. Margo Fryer received the 2008/09 Margaret Fulton Award for her outstanding contributions to student development and the university community. Dr. Fryer’s work has enabled thousands of UBC students to get involved in their community and explore firsthand what it means to be global citizens. Margo and several other distinguished award recipients were honored at the Student Development Awards ceremony hosted by the Office of the Vice President, Students.
