Welcome to a month of activities to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the UBC Learning Exchange.
The Learning Exchange was initiated in 1999 to make connections between the University of British Columbia and Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES) by providing a place where people can get to know each other, pursue shared interests, learn from each other and, in doing so, increase university and community capacity to act for positive change.
The Learning Exchange is a key part of UBC’s commitment to community engagement and student learning expressed in its strategic plan, Place and Promise, and over the past 15 years has become a trusted and valued contributor to the DTES community. We take an asset-based approach to our work, recognizing the strengths, diversity and creativity found in both the DTES and university communities.
The Learning Exchange provides a place where UBC students and faculty can connect with local people and organizations, through a range of community-university engagement activities. In its premises at 612 Main Street it provides, year round, a welcoming, informal and lively focal point in the DTES. Each week hundreds of people participate, at their own pace, as learners, trainers, facilitators, and also contributors to the generation of new knowledge/research.
To celebrate our past and current achievements we have put together an exciting program of activities that highlight the range of what we do and who we partner with. We welcome all of you to join our celebrations, and, perhaps more importantly, help us to shape our activities over the next 15 years.
