Student Orientation Materials

The UBC Learning Exchange has developed student orientation materials to help students learn about Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES).

These materials are designed for use by both community organizations and UBC departments to help students better understand some of the strengths, opportunities and challenges facing communities like the DTES. Through exploring some of the positive, creative and complex sides of the neighborhood, students are able to balance and think critically about the negative, one-dimensional information that is often available.

To access these materials, please contact our Student Learning Coordinator, Matt Hume at matt.hume@ubc.ca. We will develop a tailored orientation package for you and provide additional guidance on facilitating these orientation materials.

UBC students, faculty and staff can also view Shifting the Story, a video series that helps orient students to the Downtown Eastside:

  • Click here and sign in with your CWL (required).
  • You can access the accompanying discussion guides by clicking on the “Attachments” button below each video.

To access the video without a CWL (UBC campus wide logon) please contact Matt Hume.

Special thanks to the UBC Equity Enhancement Fund for generously supporting the development of these materials.
