UBC Staff Contribute to Grandview School Holiday Festivities

UBC Staff celebrate community

UBC staff shared their festive spirit before the holidays at Grandview/?Uuqinak’uuh Elementary School. This school has been a partner in the Learning Exchange Trek Program for several years.

Grandview held their first annual Christmas Dinner for students and their families on Monday, December 13, 2004.  Nearly 15 UBC staff helped with the event by decorating the gym, sorting through donated gifts, setting up Santa’s corner and helping to serve food to the 400 guests.  The event was an outstanding success — as was evident in comments received from Grandview staff:

“The evening was a wonderful coming together of families, staff and volunteers in our school community.  It was very rewarding to see the happy excited faces of our children throughout the evening as they enjoyed a happy night of gifts, entertainment and a delicious meal. It was due to the combined efforts and generosity of groups such as yourself, that such a successful event was possible.” (Caroline, School Principal)

UBC staff involved in the event were excited about being included in this community event. As one volunteer mentioned,

“My volunteer experience for the Grandview Christmas Party proved to be a terrific opportunity to be involved in a special community project that in the end, reminded me of the spirit and joy of giving to others, but further, the importance of being a caring and compassionate human being in today’s world… I truly enjoyed the sense of camaraderie that developed over the course of the afternoon… and I was in awe of the effort that so many individuals and community organizations put forth to make this project a meaningful and enjoyable experience for so many… I was so pleased to have been a participant in this endeavour and I look forward to being involved in future UBC Learning Exchange volunteer opportunities.”

Both staff from UBC and from Grandview hope to see UBC’s involvement in the school’s holiday celebration become a tradition.
