Introduction to Sociology

With Patricia Kachuk and Rima Wilkes –- UBC Department of Anthropology and Sociology.

These workshops will focus on increasing our understanding of what sociology is and how it is used in our everyday life. Each workshop will be about 50% lecture and 50% discussion of the lecture material.

Sociology and the Sociological Perspective
Friday, Nov. 5th, 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm
In this workshop we will introduce sociology, talk about its uses as a scientific method, the benefits of a sociological perspective, and what sociologists do.

Using your Sociological Imagination
Friday, Nov. 12th, 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm
Learn how to think in a sociological manner using specific examples of research by Emile Durkheim, an early Sociologist.

Critical Thinking
Friday, Nov. 19th, 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm
How do you think critically? What is it to challenge ‘common sense’ beliefs?
